Svaneti

Svaneti is located in the northern part of western Georgia and includes the southern slopes of the Caucasus Range and the upper Enguri River and Tskhenistskali. Old traditions in Svaneti are well preserved. Among them is the most interesting – lamproba. It is celebrated in early spring and its purpose was to get a good weather and to increase the human and animal reproduction. In Svaneti you can see tall towers made of stones and boulders, initially they had defense function. This can explain why the upper parts of the towers have places for the guns. Today, the towers are used as a station. Today people keep their animals there. Svan hat is one of the main attributes of everyday life of Svan. It is made from weaving and equally protects from the heat and cold. Kubdari and Chvistari are the most famous dishes of Svan cuisine. You will meet Svanuri salt in all of Georgia's regions. It is kind of spice which is used to make dishes more delicious. There are 10 highest peaks in Svaneti that’s why it is considered to be the highest populated region in the Caucasus. The highest peak of Georgia Shkhara is located in Svaneti and it is 5201 meters high. Svaneti is popular among alpinism lovers and skiers.
