Guria

Guria is located in the west of Georgia. In the north its territory is stretched on Kolkheti lowland and in the south-east it lies on the northern slopes of Meskheti ridge. The population of Guria has rich spiritual, economic and material culture. They stand out for handicraft and constructing skills. Folk religious holidays and customs such as Lamproba, Kalandoba are preserved in the region. Singing is an integral part of Guruli people’s life. Guruli song “Krimanchuli” which is performed in three and four voices is one of the best examples of Georgian polyphonic tradition. People from Guria used to be an outstanding horseriders. They traveled around the world and in the 19th century they took part in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show after which the Queen of the Britain Victoria gave them the letter of appreciation. Guruli people have an outstanding sense of hospitality and an exquisite cuisine. Nuts, walnuts and locally grown products are mainly used in the dishes which makes food especially delicious. The most famous dishes are: satsivi, guruli pie, pkhali, chiri, jam and etc. Guria is rich with historical monuments. Ureki which is the sea resort with magnetic sand is situated in Guria.
